what it holds
Bands holds the witnessed ladder, one entry per form. Each entry is a threshold expressed in witnessed fast blocks, and the entries are ordered so that each is greater than the one before it.
The whole array is written into the record and readable now.1 Nothing about it waits for the chain to produce a value, and the figure on the math page draws every bar from it today.
A band is not a reward and not a stage of a plan. It is a line on a ruler, placed before anything was measured.
What a band carries is a form, which is the body the record wears once that threshold has been crossed.
what writes it
The ladder itself is written once, at deployment, and never again. What moves is the position on it.
When witnessed crosses the next entry, anyone may call advance. The call compares the stored witnessed total against the next threshold and does nothing else.1
Crossing is recorded with the fast block it happened at and the address that called, so the ladder gains a history without gaining an authority.
Only witnessed drives the comparison. Dark, marks, lapses and the treasury are read by nothing in this path.
what it cannot do
There is no band beyond the last one. The array has a length and the position cannot exceed it.
Nothing happens after the last band. Witnessed continues to accumulate, marks continue to land, and the ladder has nothing further to say about any of it.
The thresholds are fixed at deployment and no instruction alters them. There is no path that inserts an entry, raises one, or lowers one.
A band cannot be skipped and cannot be crossed backwards, so the position is always equal to the number of thresholds passed.
how to read it
Because the ladder is prewritten, the distance to the next band is a fact rather than a projection.1 It is a subtraction between two numbers that both already exist.
That distance can only be closed by attention. No purchase, no vote and no elapsed time moves witnessed on its own.
Read the ladder against witnessed to see position, and against dark to see what the position cost in unattended time.
The table lists each band with its threshold and, once crossed, the block and the caller that crossed it.
