trait bits
what it holds
Trait bits holds the cosmetic roll of the current body. It is a packed value, and each part of it selects one visible feature of the figure the record wears.
Nothing in the roll is a measurement.1 The bits describe how the figure is drawn and say nothing about witnessed, dark, marks or any other field.
The value is stored alongside the form index, and the two together are sufficient to draw the body from scratch.
It is the only field on the site whose subject is appearance.
what writes it
The bits are rerolled on advance, and on nothing else. The same call that raises the form index derives a new value and writes it.
The derivation reads the record state. Because that state is public and the function is fixed, the same state produces the same body for every observer.
No wallet influences it.1 The address that calls advance does not enter the derivation, so a caller cannot roll toward a result they prefer.
A reroll replaces the whole value at once. No part of a previous roll is carried forward.
what it cannot do
The roll carries no rarity. No feature is scarcer than another by design, and the record publishes no distribution against which scarcity could be claimed.
It carries no score. Nothing in the contract sums the bits, compares them, or derives a quality from them.
It carries no ranking, because nothing on this site ranks. There is no leaderboard, no tier and no ordering of any kind.
It also cannot be requested. There is no instruction that rerolls without advancing, so the roll changes only when witnessed has crossed a band.
how to read it
The trait bits determine the figure's marks. The dark ratio determines how much of the figure is missing. Those are separate things and they are computed from separate inputs.1
A body that looks eroded is reporting the ratio, not the roll. A body with different features is reporting the roll, not the ratio.
Reading the bits therefore tells a reader nothing about how the record has been attended. Only the totals do that.
The table lists each roll with the form index it belongs to and the block it was rolled at, so any body the record has worn can be reconstructed.
